sarah300x300I looked to the Life Programme as a source of change.

I had no real expectations and I approached it with a view that it could be like a holiday offering a bit of time just for me. In recent years I have suffered with depression, yet at the same time been the life and soul for people that I spent time with. Sadly, for my husband and behind closed doors, I was moody and volatile – like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

I was born in Dunfermline in 1979, and grew up within quite a dysfunctional family. I thrive around people, and my fondest memories of childhood were spending Christmas with my grandparents because it was only then that my family would be on their best behaviour, and act like a family should.

I had my first of two daughters when I was just 17, and I have a really good, almost sisterly relationship with her. My second daughter came along five years later, and with her I have a more traditional relationship.

Although I value my husband and daughters to be the most important part of my life, I was becoming increasingly aware that matters connected to my past and a stressful job, were contributing to a re-creation of the dysfunction I experienced as a child in my own family.

I totally embraced what the Life Programme offered and my first revelation was that other people are important, and that my unappreciative and bad attitude towards others had to stop.  I didn’t take advantage of some of the therapies that were available yet by day 4, I realised that the negative thoughts I held about others had dissolved and this was a distinct change in me. Once I returned home from the programme, I found the courage to confront years of denial, and sought further counseling to help unpick the issues that were affecting me.

If I’m honest, I don’t recognise the old me at all. My life at home and with my family is now just amazing, and for the first time in years I am able to enjoy the family experience that I was always looking for. I’ve also started a new career in the technology industry which is a far cry from my industrial roots. In terms of wellbeing, I go to boot camp to stay fit and I eat healthily too which was previously unheard of. Without a doubt spending time with the coaching team and other people on the Life Programme has made a massive difference for me.
